December 12th is a very special date for Mexicans, since Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared to Saint Juan Diego for the last time on this day, asking for the construction of a temple of worship. As proof of these miraculous encounters, Our Lady urged Juan Diego to take some roses from Mount Tepeyac to Bishop Zumárraga, and upon presenting the roses, an image of Our Lady of Guadalupe appeared on the sheet Juan Diego was using to transport the roses. Likewise, this day marks the beginning of the beloved posadas, or Christmas parties, that characterize this wonderful time of year.
According to tradition, the “Patroness of Mexico” appeared to Juan Diego four times on Mount Tepeyac. The last of these miraculous encounters took place on December 12th, 1531.
